Playing Contact Sports with Braces: How to Choose the Right Mouthguard
One of the most common questions we get asked at Titan is from athletes who've just been fitted with Invisalign or fixed braces: can you still safely play contact sports?
It’s a completely understandable concern. Braces can make people feel unsure about whether sport is still an option at all, especially in rugby, boxing, hockey, MMA, and other activities where impact is part of the game.
The reassuring answer is yes, you can still play contact sports with braces. The key is choosing the right kind of mouthguard.
Why Braces Need Special Protection in Sport
Fixed braces add another layer of risk during sport. A knock to the mouth can do more than just hurt teeth. It can also damage brackets and wires, cut the lips or cheeks, and potentially interfere with orthodontic treatment.
A good brace mouthguard should help:
-
protect the teeth and gums
-
reduce contact between braces and soft tissue
-
accommodate brackets and wires comfortably
-
provide the right level of protection for the sport being played
Can You Use a Custom Mouthguard with Braces?
Although our Titan custom mouthguards are often seen as one of the best options for general dental protection (we're a little biased in this area), they are not suitable for wearers of fixed braces.
This is because the impression process used to make a custom mouthguard can create problems around the brace itself. The putty used to take the mould may catch around brackets or rails, and in some cases removal can risk damaging the appliance.
However the good news for Invisalign wearers is that the Titan impression process is fully compatible with the tooth fixtures, so these athletes can shop from our entire boil or custom fit range with confidence.
Are Standard Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards Good for Braces?
Our standard and Titan range of Boil-Fit mouthguards may work for some wearers, but in most cases they are not the ideal option for braces.
The main issue is that regular boil-fit designs are not built specifically around the shape and projection of brackets. This can lead to uneven material distribution across the front of the mouthguard.
-
Too much material in some areas and too little material over the actual brace area
-
A bulky fit while still leaving vulnerable zones under protected
Different Sports Need Different Levels of Protection
Not every sport carries the same risk, and that should influence which mouthguard is chosen.
-
Light contact or school sport may suit a simpler brace-compatible guard
-
Heavy contact sports need a more protective design that manages material distribution around the braces properly

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you play contact sports with braces?
Yes. You can still play contact sports with braces, but you should wear a mouthguard that is suitable for fixed orthodontic appliances.
Are custom mouthguards safe for braces?
No. Custom mouthguards are generally not suitable while wearing fixed braces because the impression process can interfere with brackets and rails.
Can you use a normal boil-and-bite mouthguard with braces?
Some wearers may use them, but they are usually not recommended because they do not protect the brace area evenly.
What is the best mouthguard for braces?
The best option is a mouthguard specifically designed for brace wearers, with the right level of protection for the sport being played.
Do braces make sports more dangerous?
Braces do not mean you have to stop playing sport, but they do increase the importance of using the correct protection.
